One notable inclusion to the Mario Kart 8 instalment is the anti-gravity areas of the map, which allows the tracks to avert themselves and twist and turn in any direction. Not only does this add a level of freshness to veterans of the franchise, but you can also be tactical as each bump in the anti-gravity sections gives you a speed boost! Of course, the game still features the iconic item boxes, featuring everyone’s favourite rage inducing shells, but the wait time between the box being collected and then reappearing is significantly reduced. This is a very welcome addition to the gameplay mechanics, especially when racing in 200cc. Yes, you read that right. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe features the completely new engine class 200cc, which is as highly chaotic, intense and adrenaline fuelled as it sounds!

The gameplay is smooth, visually striking, fast paced and truly offers something for everyone, whether a casual player or the more seasoned veteran. It is easy to learn but harder to master and bustling with game modes and unlockable features. Sink some time into experimenting with the expansive range of characters as well as customising your kart from its frame and parachute right down to its wheels! The possibilities are almost endless, and you’ll have an absolute blast testing it all out.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder takes the tried and true 2D platform genre and revamps it for modern consoles in the first traditional side-scrolling Super Mario game since New Super Mario Bros. U (2012)! The story is fairly simple, following the classic Mario formula; Bowser has once again kidnapped Princess Peach, and it’s up to Mario and Luigi to save her. However, in a first for the Mario universe, they have the help of new Wonder Flowers that grant them unique abilities such as blowing bubbles, drilling through the ground, and including Mario’s newest power up; Elephant Mario. All of these features succeed in adding a layer of variety and creativity to the traditional Mario experience we have come to love.

Gameplay

The game is brimming with colourful and creative levels, each with its own unique theme and challenges. Indeed, the game features a new art style that is both cute and striking and the soundtrack is catchy and upbeat to perfectly complement the game’s atmosphere. The game prioritizes fun and accessibility over raw difficulty, and most can comfortably progress through the main story. If you are a fan of more of a challenge, however, there is also the inclusion of optional challenges and higher difficulty settings. When playing in co-op mode, lives are shared resulting in less frustration all around.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a delightful and charming platformer that offers a fresh take on the classic Mario formula. With its creative use of Wonder Flowers, its diverse levels, and fun and engaging gameplay, it is a must for any Mario fan!

For fans of 3D platform games, look no further than Super Mario Galaxy 2! It directly follows the first Super Mario Galaxy, sending Mario and the gang on another cosmic adventure to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser’s clutches. Whilst the first instalment lays some groundwork for the story and mechanics, it is not totally necessary to play first (although definitely also a great game). The game refines the controls of its predecessor, making Mario’s movements even tighter and more intuitive. New power-ups like Rock Mario and Bee Mario introduce exciting abilities, while everyone’s favourite dinosaur Yoshi returns with his unique skills. Whether bouncing across clouds as Cloud Mario or spinning through levels as Bee Mario, each power-up adds a fresh layer of fun and opens up new gameplay possibilities.

Gameplay

While core platforming mechanics remain familiar, Super Mario Galaxy 2 doesn’t shy away from introducing new and unique elements. Comet Medals offer extra challenges for more seasoned veterans and the addition of hidden collectibles throughout the galaxies adds a rewarding layer of exploration, encouraging you to uncover every nook and cranny. Whilst the game is two player, the co-op mechanics are not as refined or immersive as some others on this list. Story

Released in 2021 and winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards, It Takes Two revolves around a miniature couple, Cody and May, who are brought to life by the magic of their daughter’s tears. With the option of both local and online co-op, each player is responsible for controlling one of the two characters as you progress through imaginative and visually stunning environments, ranging from a whimsical garden to a clockwork world.

Gameplay

With a focus on collaboration and communication, it is almost impossible to play this game without genuinely working together to progress through the story, puzzles and bosses. In addition to the bright, colourful visuals, the split-screen perspective dynamically changes to highlight specific moments, ensuring both players stay engaged throughout the story. Not a fan of a certain type of gameplay? Story

Monaco: What’s Yours is Mine is a stealth, heist game for up to 4 players online or couch co-op. Reminiscent of classic caper films, your aim is to pull of heists in various locations including banks, mansions, casinos and art galleries through a blend of stealth, strategy and teamwork. Each level presents a different scenario with its own layout, security systems and objectives and with a choice of eight character classes, each with unique abilities and playstyles ranging from the Locksmith, who can open locked doors quickly, to the Cleaner, who can incapacitate enemies silently.

Gameplay

The level design is varied and engaging, coupled with fun graphics and a great soundtrack. Yes you and your team can attempt to plan and execute a masterplan, but the dynamic gameplay encourages improvisation and adaptability that is often chaotic and highly entertaining. The game is designed to be accessible to players of all skill levels while still offering depth and challenge, all while allowing you to experiment with both levels and character classes. Even if your significant other isn’t a gaming fan, you are sure to have a thrilling time together playing this light hearted and humorous game.

Whether playing to beat the game, or just trying to beat the missions in as little time as possible, Monaco is fast paced, at times fairly challenging, but a genuinely enjoyable experience to play with others.

A Way Out is a cinematic, narrative game following two prisoners, Leo and Vincent, as they plan and attempt to execute a prison break. With only 21 playable characters in the original release, FighterZ does not include the same extensive roster as some of the other games on this list, however, the characters themselves span across the whole of the Dragon Ball Z saga, meaning it is highly likely you can play as at least one of your favourites! Characters range from Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Frieza, Cell, and many more! Furthermore, FighterZ allows you to select and play as 3 characters in every battle, with seamless switching between each. There’s an engaging range of movesets for each player and one of the more unexpectedly amusing aspects of the game is teaming unconventional characters together, like Gotenks and Ginyu, for lighthearted banter before a battle.

Learning Curve and Skill Ceiling

With explosive and intense combat, you would be forgiven for being intimidated by the gameplay, but fear not! Fighterz is extremely welcoming to newcomers of the genre and employs a straightforward control scheme, making it easy to grasp basic movements, attacks, and special moves. Additionally, Dragon Ball FighterZ includes an auto-combo system, allowing you to perform simple yet visually impressive combos by repeatedly pressing the light attack button. Clean and accessible as it is, you can also progress past simply spamming auto-combos to hone the more technical components of the gameplay (namely, dodging said auto-combos)! With fluid and fast battles, timing is key and can only truly be mastered with practice over time, making hitting the skill ceiling a gradual and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

My Hero One’s Justice 2 is a 3D arena fighting game based on My Hero Academia and the sequel to My Hero One’s Justice, expanding upon its predecessor with new characters, features, and improvements. Like Naruto, My Hero One’s Justice 2 includes a Story Mode that follows the events of the anime and includes perspectives of both heroes and villains, whilst also providing co-op and online multiplayer battles. The game allows you to choose from around 40 different playable (and customisable!) characters including both heroes and villains and featuring Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, All Might and Shoto Todoroki amongst others. With 18 new characters added since its predecessor, each with their own unique moves and the ability to utilise support characters, the roster truly provides a treat for fans of the anime! The movesets are different for each character, sharing no similarities when it comes to quirks (ie. One quirk heavy move will be a gravity move for another character)! These quirks are extremely faithful to the anime and lots of fun to utilize featuring gravity, flying, seal, super speed, etc!

Learning Curve and Skill Ceiling

At its core, My Hero One’s Justice 2 is a generic fighting game (with completely destructible maps!), adopting the tried and true attack, jump, and dash mechanics that contribute to the majority of the fighting style and combos. Each character also has two special moves, or ‘quirks’ that add some depth into the gameplay whilst keeping the learning curve of the game relatively low. Despite this, the support character functionality is interesting to experiment with and you can create some great combos with your characters, which adds a level of strategic thinking for those more experienced in the fighting genre. Ultimately, My Hero One’s Justice 2 is easy to learn and a good bit of casual fun, however, after mastering the skill set of each character there is really no way up from there.

Released in 2021, Demon Slayer is based on the beloved anime of the same name. With the option of playing story mode or duelling in battles, faithfulness to the series is truly where this game shines. If you are a fan of the anime (and can sit through lengthy cutscenes), you will love playing through the story mode, featuring interactions and battles at multiple key moments through the story. Whilst the game could benefit from more stages (an introduction of the interactive kind could really boost some of the more repetitive gameplay), and a more diverse range of game modes, ultimately Demon Slayer is an enjoyably bright and engaging versus game.

Character Selection

Through cinematic battles, you are given the opportunity to play as multiple characters including both slayers and demons including Tanjiro, Nezuko, Rui and Akaza to name a few! Multiple DLCs have continued to add the anime’s later demons and characters versions, keeping the gameplay fresh and exciting. Unfortunately, several of the characters (mainly the hashiras) are unlocked only as you play through the story mode and, for some, this can be a laborious process. However, through extensive playing of the versus mode (and we mean extensive) there is the ability to unlock achievements which can also be used towards unlocking characters.

One of the more interesting features of the character selection is the support character mechanic. Playing as a slayer, including hashiras, gives you the ability to select, utilise, and even switch to a support character throughout the battle. Playing as a demon does not allow for this option, thereby adding a level of strategy and skill starting right from the character selection!

Learning Curve and Skill Ceiling

The learning curve of the game is relatively accessible for beginners who want to enjoy the story and basic gameplay, but it can become steeper for those aiming to excel in the more competitive aspects of the game. The basic controls for each character are the same but the speed and range of each differs, giving you the opportunity to experiment with and adapt your playstyle. The battles are vibrant and visually stunning, with some finishing move scenes coming directly from the anime, and the need to block and evade alleviate the combat from becoming the simple button mashing experience that some fighting games can fall victim to. Whilst you can get away with button mashing to an extent, the combat mechanics are a lot deeper than predecessors of the same company and timing for each move is crucial, something that takes patience and practice to truly master.

Jump Force is a crossover fighting game bringing together characters from various manga and anime series including Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Hunter x Hunter, and many more! Playing as your own customizable avatar, choose the story mode, revolving around the real world colliding with anime, or engage in 3D arena-style battles. Whilst Jump Force is not a perfect game by any means, it remains notable for its unique crossover and the appeal of playing as characters from such a wide variety of anime and manga.

The game’s launch roster features 40 playable characters from 16 different series, plus an additional 14 characters available through DLCs and a free update. Some notable characters include Asta (Black Clover), Goku and Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z), Jotaro Kuji (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia), Naruto and Sasuke (Naruto), and Monkey D Luffy and Roronoa Zoro (One Piece) to name a few (and that really is only a few!) Each character in Jump Force has a set of unique special moves and ultimate attacks inspired by their respective manga and anime series. Indeed, the impressive array of source material and characters is truly where this game shines, getting a perfect 5/5 from us!

Learning Curve and Skill Ceiling

Unfortunately, this is where things start to go a little downhill. Jump Force is designed to appeal to a broader audience, including fans of the included series who may not be hardcore fighting game enthusiasts. As a result, the gameplay prioritises a more casual experience that allows you to enjoy the spectacle of the battles rather than nuanced and challenging mechanics. Featuring straightforward controls, it is fairly easy to execute and master basic attacks, special moves, and combos (the game also features auto-combos). And this is essentially all there is to the game. While it does have the combos and special moves we have come to expect from fighting games, the depth of combo variations and intricate mechanics are certainly not as extensive as the other games on this list. In addition to this, the game’s AI can be somewhat predictable, making it easier to learn patterns and find effective strategies when playing in singleplayer mode. Whilst Jump Force may be bottom of our list in terms of gameplay, it is still a visually fun instalment of casual, anime battles to check out.

The story follows your team of superheroes coming together to fight off Dr. Doom and his team of Marvel Villains. The side quests also play a vital part in the story as they effect the ending.

The game features splendid graphics and lots of recognizable characters from marvel as well as a setting faithful to the Marvel Universe and beautiful cutscenes.

The game allows players to control a team of 4 superheroes and players can choose from a roster of over 20 characters, each with their own skills and combos. Characters can jump, double jump and even fly on top their attack combos and special powers. Another cool aspect is special team attacks that dish out a lot of damage. While the AI leaves something to be desired, playing with friends can be a total blast and Bosses are a challenge, rightly so.

Impression

Fans of the LoTR franchise are in for a real treat with this entry! It’s based on the final chapter of the trilogy and uses the same digital assets as the movies, on top of providing an extremely enjoyable split screen experience. The only con is game only supports 2 player co-op.

The story is true to the amazing LoTR storytelling and covers the epic finale to the trilogy. It follows 3 paths (wizard, king and hobbit) and 9 characters including Gandalf, Aragorn and Legolas to name a few.

The gameplay is a solid hack slash, where each character has their own combos and skills, including those unique to race. Levels can be gained by killing enemies, of which there are a good variety and many epic bosses. The challenge provided is just right, as it requires a good amount of strategy and teamwork, where just charging in is bound to get you overwhelmed.

The graphics are also amazing for the PS2 and use digital assets from the movie as well as lots of extras, such as interviews with the cast playing the game.

Impression

COR is another great option for those looking for some split screen action rpg goodness. Featuring 4 payers as oppose to 2, amazing graphics and solid yet cliche story, the gameplay holds it all together with your fun but standard ARPG goodness.

The story featured is solid, while being relatively cliched. The realm faces danger from an evil alliance forged by Orcs and Goblins, laying waste to the wood elves, and urging the need for a hero; One that will traverse all types of dangers, including forests, dungeons and lava to say the least.

The gameplay also follows the ARPG tried and true formula, it features 5 races that have their own play styles and roles within a party. To add more variety, it also allows for character customization.

The Graphics in COR are really nice, the quality of water, animation, level design and more are all high quality, with the exception of some blurring here and there.

Impression

Baldur’s Gate is an incredibly fun experience, made better with a friend or family member. The ARPG formula works, the story is kept interesting and the graphics are amazing. Its only cons are its linear story and limit of 2 players.

The story is interesting and brought together really well, it follows the cliche of fighting against the darkness that threatens the peace of Baldur’s Gate. However it does lose points for a linear story telling experience and does not include any side-quests.

Gameplay relies on hacking and slashing your way through waves of enemies in dungeons on your way to the next objective. It features 3 characters to choose from including: Dwarven Warrior, Elven Sorceress and Human Archer. Skills are gained upon level up from killing enemies. It stays true to ARPG formula and brings it together in a way that’s really fun. The only con is that it’s limited to 2 players as oppose to 4.

The graphics in this game are beautiful for the PS2, it has a variety of settings such as vast forests, snow mountains and ice caves to name a few and includes details such as ripples when walking through ponds.

If you’re looking for an arcade hack and slash action rpg, Gauntlet is your game! What it loses in the visual department it makes up with a huge roster, fun gameplay and an engaging story.

Gauntlet provides an engaging story true to the series. It features a powerful wizard Sumner who rules 8 realms. His younger brother who is jealous of his older brothers power and position, sets off in search of powerful magic, so that he can challenge the throne; and in doing so, lets the mighty demon Skorne escape and threaten the 8 realms.

The gameplay is where this title shines, it provides an arcade like type of hack and slash and a generous starting roster of 8 different classes including valkyries, jesters, dwarfs and more. You unlock more as you progress through a series of 60 levels with many epic bosses to slay.

The Graphics are not the most impressive on this list, as the characters tend to come out blocky and the first few levels are too detailed. However the backgrounds do get better in the later levels.
